EXPERIENCES
Culinary Arts is an activity that I have been doing as a past-time hobby. I love learning the ways and processes on how I can create anything that I dream of. I also love learning about different types of cultural foods and the nutrients inside.
I really enjoyed the time when my teacher instructed me to create a dish that combined different cuisines. This allowed my partner and I to research about various cultures and their traditional foods. We ended up deciding on a Mexican Taco, with Brazilian Mango Salsa and Korean Short Ribs. I really enjoyed this activity because it allowed us to learn more about how a food can impact a country’s origin and culture. I also really enjoy cooking because it allows me to dive deeper and learn about what goes into my food. Throughout my 2 years of learning culinary arts, I studied macro and micro nutrients. I also learned about the chemical reaction of ingredients, the usage of plants/spices and the functions of our human taste buds and how they react to different flavours. Another fond memory of mine with culinary arts is the time when we were asked to make a pastry dish. I had never interacted with much pastry before as it was something new to me. I had no idea how to control the oven’s temperature and the amount of tools used to make this Italian dish was immense.
Another experience I have with cooking or making drinks is coffee. Recently, I got into the hobby of making espresso. My parents really enjoy drinking lattes in the morning and I have always wanted to learn more about espresso. The process that goes into making a good cup has a lot of different details; the grinding takes a long time to master, if it grinds too fine there would be a lot of channelling, but if it grounds too coarse then it will not tamp properly. There is a lot of process that goes into a beautiful cup of coffee. I love exploring espresso since it involves lots of hands on activity and also thinking.
